RIDE – bike print

Finally our new big bike print is on the wall!

After months of watching and discussing just the two of us and with really nice bike people we decided that the bike that Eddie Merckx used for his “Hour Record” 1972 in Mexico City should be the object for our next XL bike print. The bike is clean and nice, very close to the image that pops up in our heads when we hear the word bike. And Eddie Merckx seems to be a very nice cyclist who has continued his bike journey in a nice way.

We fell over a long essay about the mystery: which bike is the bike that Eddie actually used during the record? We started to compare the different versions and still were not sure about which of them is “the bike” but at least we have quite good odds as we have used parts from to different bikes ; ) One of the bikes is shown at the Eddie Merckx Subway station in Brussels and we where on our way to picture it but halfway there we had to change our plans due to the awful terror acts in Brussels during Easter week 2016.

“Ride as much or as little, or as long or as short as you feel. But ride.”
That is a quote from Mr Merckx that we really like and the reason we gave this print the name “Ride”.

This time we are using a heavier off-white (or cream shade) paper from the Swedish paper mill Munken. It feels and looks very nice.

What is a screenprint?

Most of our products are screenprinted by hand, but maybe you wonder how it works…..

A screen print (or silk-screen) is a print where the ink is forced through a mesh (screen) using a rubber squeegee. Jollygoodfellow usually start with one or more photographs which is adjusted and rasterized in the computer. Sometimes with some added hand-drawing. The image is transferred to a transparent film and exposed on a screen which is prepared with photo emulsion. And when the screen is rinsed and dry it’s time to start printing in the jollygoodfellow garage printshop!

Birds Formation

it’s something that we are very happy about and we managed to capture a few of them.

Batterie

We have thought about printing drums for a long time. In the beginning the idea was to make a print of a drum kit set up ready to play. And we were looking for a drummer with the right attitude and the perfect drums. But after a while we just took our own drums and started to try out. For us the best way was to put them in a pile and we were really exited!

After some calls we got access to a rehearsal hall with a huge collection of vintage drums. We looked and picked drums from the shelves like kids in a toy store. But then we fell in love with this little kit standing by the entrance.

Allemansrätten

The freedom to roam, or everyman’s right (Allemansrätten) is the general public’s right to access certain public or privately owned land for recreation and exercise. The right is sometimes called the right of public access to the wilderness or the right to roam. (Wikipedia) This print is our celebration to and reminder of Allemansrätten!

The poster is screen printed by hand in black and white on brownish paper. The paper is made out of recycled paper and rests from paper production (“kvistmassa”) so the look of the paper vary and can change color slightly . Also available on our standard paper Munken Pure (off white) were the text is printed in grey. You can have a look at it in the shop.

Slightly Imperfect

The pile of irregular tote bags have grown big, so we were thinking of something to do with them. Maybe turn them into pillow cases? But then we thought of an old print idea that has been in the drawer (or sketch book) for many years.

We have collected small marks for “irregular quality” during the years. The first one’s were found on cheap t-shirts and underwear bought in New York in the 1990’s.

Now we have let them be the main motif on some bags!

The expression ”slightly imperfect” is kind of funny. It sounds humble but at the same time says ”almost perfect”. Like the swedish expression ”Obetydliga skönhetsfel kan förekomma” which means something like ”insignificant beauty imperfections might occur”. And who doesn’t feel like that at times?

Urban Cube Calendar Cork!

We have worked with street numbers for a long time. We have spent weeks and documented street numbers in the Nordic capitals for our wall calendar urbnCal. Now we have selected some favorites and made a perpetual calender in cork that can live for a long time.

The first step was to find a good supplier of cork that could make solid cubes for us. To our suprise we found one in a nereby town. Then we checked the durability with the kids help 😉

After some planning it is time to screen print one side at the time with the right number on the right side…

And here it is! The Urban Cube Calendar in cork!

The Calendar was shown for the first time at northmodern Copenhagen in August 2015. Now it is available in our Jollygood Shop.

Jollygoodfellow + CLOSE by DENIM

When we started up the jollygoodfellow printshop many years ago the focus was on t-shirts. But now most of the prints are on paper (posters). Some times we miss it, but we realize that we haven’t time to do it right now.

When Petra Backlund from Close by Denim asked us if we wanted to collaborate it felt so right, especially since we share the same values (environmental friendly production and products, local production as far at it’s possible, products with long life etc). We really like their tag line “CLOSE by DENIM is brought to life from a spirit of mindful spending.” Now the first t-shirts are launched and we are looking forward to continue the collaboration!
